I graduated from college in the spring of 2014, majoring in English with an Ethnic Studies minor. I chose to study English because I was good at in high school and I wanted to expand upon that.
When my daughter was born, I was determined to give her a better life, a better opportunity and to show her that anything is possible. We moved back to Fort Collins for school, but it was difficult to find consistent child care for Scarlet.
When my original childcare fell through, I was able to find space for her at a local daycare, but my job at the school newspaper and with Scarlet's dad not paying child support, I wasn't able to afford it. After receiving assistance from my parents, I decided to look into other options to help pay for the cost and a professor suggested the WomenGive scholarship.
It was such a relief and an encouragement to see that there was a group of people in the community that wanted to help us (single moms) help ourselves. When I received my acceptance letter, I was overwhelmed with joy. It was as if this piece of paper was saying, “We believe in you. We won't give up on you.” The WomenGive scholarship, along with my daughter, was the encouragement and the push I needed to plow through the hardships in order to graduate. It helped me secure a safe and nurturing environment for my daughter. I didn't have to worry about her when I was at school and those run-up-to-mommy hugs at the end of the school day near brought tears to my eyes every time.
I was lucky enough to get hired immediately after graduating and am working as a Mental Health Worker for troubled youth, and I hope to carry the love and encouragement that you showed with me and give it to these children. I don't know how to thank the members enough for this amazing opportunity. In many regards I do not think my graduation could have been possible without you. The fact that you dedicate your time and money to something like this is proof enough that your hearts are big and you are believers that women like me are trying to do everything we can for our families. It is people like you who make the biggest differences in our lives (the exception being our babies, of course), and there is not a day that goes by that I am not grateful for your kindness.
