United Way chapters wise to join efforts
Loveland Daily - Reporter Herald
June 14, 2002

The United Way of Loveland-Berthoud-Estes Park has teamed with the Fort Collins organization to develop a concerted fund-raising campaign for this year.

Officials representing the agencies said the decision was based on an effort to work more efficiently and to keep from duplicating efforts.

The two chapters raised a combined $4.3 million last year. This year, they are raising the goal to $5.5 million, a 28 percent increase. The Loveland-Berthoud-Estes Park chapter raised $1.06 million in its 2001 campaign.

Between the two chapters, United Way funds 41 human service agencies divided into five different areas: programs providing a “safety net” for emergency needs; programs promoting health, wellness and quality of life; programs nurturing youth; programs promoting self-sufficiency; and programs helping seniors.

Currently, the Loveland-Berthoud-Estes Park United Way chapter funds 38 agencies, 27 of which are located in Larimer County and receive money from both chapters. (The other 11 agencies are local agencies within the communities of Loveland, Berthoud and Estes Park.)

Both chapters will work more efficiently by using the same promotional materials and utilizing a pool of volunteers to promote the campaign countywide.

Loveland officials expressed concern over whether the southern part of the county will get its fair share of attention in the joint effort, but they were assured the Loveland chapter will continue to have its own pool of money to fund Loveland agencies.

Consolidating services should decrease overhead and increase the percent of money available for the intended agencies. You can rest assured, locals will be evaluating the effectiveness of the consolidation to determine how it affects local agencies. Let’s get behind the idea and try to make it work.
